Mom's Spaghetti Sauce
- 3 lbs. hamburger
- 1 onion chopped
- 1 green pepper, chopped
- 1 half stick margarine
- Cover above with garlic salt and cook until clear
- Drain and add a dash of Worchestershire sauce
- 1/4 cup mustard
- 1/2 bottle tomato ketchup
- 1-2 large cans tomato sauce (can use flavors if you choose)
- 1 large can tomato paste (rinse can and add that water)
- If accidentally added too much water, you can add more tomato paste
- Cook 2-3 hours for best flavor
I guess I basically use the above, but vary the quantities depending on how much I want to make. I sometimes start out with a large can of prepared cheese spaghetti sauce and add chopped tomatoes (usually the canned ones are the best - if you use garden fresh they need to be ripe!) I also add mushrooms, more onion and green pepper. If it looks too thick I add more tomato sauce. If it looks too thin I add more paste! A big part of the taste I think is the ketchup and not just sauce. I sometimes I add less margarine, but I like the taste of the ketchup in there.
Sorry I can't be more specific - I have through the years left off the mushrooms (julie doesn't like) and then the larger hunks of peppers and tomatoes (Chloe didn't like). I guess that is why my sauce tastes different every time!
